All in One SEO Pack Backwards Compatibility

All in One SEO Pack Pro Version

All in One SEO Pack currently supports quite a number of older versions of WordPress.  This isn’t necessarily a pain to keep up, but does require extra code as well as additional testing.  Potentially even more significant are the security implications.  Justin Tadlock wrote an insightful post about whether plugins and theme authors should force users to upgrade.  It would be helpful if Automattic would release stats of which versions of which plugins are running on which versions of WordPress.  Short of that, I only know from experience of seeing All in One SEO Pack installed on older versions occasionally, and sometimes even on extremely old versions.

What are your thoughts?  Should All in One SEO Pack continue to support outdated versions of WordPress for people who don’t upgrade for whatever reason?  Should explicit support be dropped, in favor of better functionality, less development time, lighter code?

All in One SEO Pack Must be Configured

All in One SEO Pack Pro Version

At the start of the weekend, we released the 1.6.x version of All in One SEO Pack.  This is a major upgrade, with numerous improvements, bugfixes, feature enhancements, and increased functionality.  This version is months in the making, with the last month or so dedicated almost completely to testing, with dozens of volunteers from around the world participating.  Thank you to all the beta testers.

So far (three days), All in One SEO Pack 1.6.x has been downloaded approximately 55,000 times.  Of these, almost all of the upgrades/installs have gone flawlessly.  A few people have had questions about exactly what to do for this upgrade.  When you first activate the new version, you’ll see a message to let you know that All in One SEO Pack Must be Configured.  All in One SEO Pack must be configuredDon’t worry, this is normal.  Everyone sees this.  When you activate the plugin from the plugin management page in WordPress, you’ll see this message, letting you know to go to the All in One SEO Pack options page.  When you go to the options page for the SEO plugin, configure the plugin however you like (or leave the default or old options) and select the enable radio button option.  Enable All in One SEO PackThen click the update settings button.

If you are upgrading from an earlier version, you’ll see one or two more buttons.  Upgrading All in One SEO PackWhat’s happening here is that the data that AIOSEOP has created in your database needs to be migrated.  Version 1.6 and above use a more efficient method of storing and retrieving data.  We could of course just had this migration script run automatically, and saved your the trouble of clicking two buttons, but we felt that this way gave you complete control, and gives you another opportunity to back up your database (just in case).

The first button refers to the All in One SEO Pack meta data (title, description, keywords, etc) for your posts/pages.  If you’ve never set any of this data, you won’t see the button.  If you don’t click the button, the data remains untouched and readable by only older versions of the plugin.  No non-AIOSEOP WordPress data will be touched at all by clicking this button.

The second button refers to your All in One SEO Pack configuration options on its settings page.  Just like with the previous button, if you don’t click it, the data remains untouched, and readable only by previous versions of the plugin.  Clicking the button migrates this data into the new format.

A lot of time and effort has gone into developing this plugin, including this huge upgrade.  If you’ve enjoyed using All in One SEO Pack or any of my other plugins, please consider making a donation.  If you’d like to keep up with my updates, subscribe to the RSS feed for Semper Fi Web Design, MichaelTorbert.com, and follow me on twitter at http://twitter.com/michaeltorbert/.

Thanks to onefinejay for his great tutorial and the use of his images.

  • 1.2.6.2Support for archive title formats (you can now tweak the titles of your archive pages).
  • 1.2.6.1Switched from stripos to strpos since the former is only available in PHP 5.
  • 1.2.6Wordpress 2.3 ready! On WP > 2.3 Tags are used as keywords.
  • 1.2.5.9Another refactoring of the title rewrite code to make it K2 Rolling Archive compatible. On themes that don’t have any title element one should get inserted.
  • 1.2.5.8Added htmlspecialchars() to post and page edit forms. This means that input is now much more resilient to quotes and other chars.
  • 1.2.5.7Categories now have their own title format and get capitalized.
  • 1.2.5.6Problem fixed with ImageManager 2.4.1
  • 1.2.5.5If you’re using UTW for tagging, tag pages now get the tag name as title automatically. Some database code for category meta tags is contained but doesn’t get executed until all is finished.
  • 1.2.5.4(internal)Added some infrastructure for category meta tags.
  • 1.2.5.3Home page title now rewritten again (if set in options).
  • 1.2.5.2Upcoming changes for the feature of having meta tags for categories. Everything is commented out, so there should be no apparent difference to 1.2.5.1. Had to commit before fixing something else.
  • 1.2.5.1There is no a tab index (taborder) in the page edit screen. Once you’re at the SEO pack title, you can tab through the other input fields as well.
  • 1.2.5You can now change the page title format, separate from the post title format.
  • 1.2.4Fixed bug where page titles got ignored when they contained single quotes.
  • 1.2.3.9Added a guard in the code in case wp_query doesn’t exist. No remedy for the problem with some 2.0.5 installations, but at least pages get produced.
  • 1.2.3.8Fixed the problem with title tags spread on several lines (yes, some themes do this).
  • 1.2.3.7More consistent option “rewrite titles”. If switched off, no title gets rewritten if you specified an individual title for a post or page. If switched on, even individually set titles adhere to the corresponding title format. This is different from the behavior before, where an individual post title was not processed with the title format, e.g. if you got your blog title appended in your title format, this was not done for those posts with individual titles.
  • 1.2.3.6Compatibility with wp-cache (again)
  • 1.2.3.5(Hopefully) fixed the bug where all posts get the same title.
  • 1.2.3.4Due to a eclipse bug, this contains the changes from 1.2.3.4 that weren’t committed in 1.2.3.3.
  • 1.2.3.3Fixed typo in is_feed, otherwise the bug in 1.2.3.2 would not have been remedied.
  • 1.2.3.2Fixed: Bug with titles on category feeds.
  • 1.2.3.1Fixed: Pages were not showing set meta title, instead the page title always was used as meta title.
  • 1.2.3Complete rewrite of rewrite_title().Removed the option for using category descriptions as title, this is implicit at the moment. This rewrite was necessary to make room for the expansion I’m planning where you can edit templates for each type of title.
  • 1.2.2(internal)Upgraded to GPL v3
  • 1.2.1.4Important Update for UTW userstypo: both aiosp_tags_noindex and aiosp_tag_noindex existed
  • 1.2.1.3Version and a link to this release history now appears in the Options for All in One SEO pack
  • 1.2.1.2(internal)changed aiosp_title_format into aiosp_post_title_format in preparation for a complete rewrite of rewrite_title
  • 1.2.1.1Fixed bug in 1.2.1 which broke your site when UTW wasn’t installed
  • 1.2.1noindex for tag pages (with Ultimate Tag Warrior)
  • 1.1Compatibility with Anarchy Media Player
  • 1.0

If the answers below don’t solve your problem, before you post a comment, please consider:

  • What exactly is not working? The meta tags are not in the source? The page is completely blank? Please be as specific as possible.
  • What is your PHP error log saying?
  • Please specify the versions you are using: PHP, WordPress, All in One SEO Pack.

Yes, it’s supposed to be a frequently asked questions list but most are not questions. If it can be described clearly without a question mark I use it that way.

Before you request support please test with the default theme!

FAQ

  • Does it work with WordPress 2.5?
    Yes it does.
  • It doesn’t work.
Actually this is not a really good notion to start with. Can you clarify it (see points below).
  • I don’t see the meta tags in the source at all.
Try it with the default theme. Try disabling other themes until you get a working combination. If all that doesn’t help leave a comment on this page. Please specify what exactly isn’t working, your WP version and if possible your PHP version.
  • I don’t see meta tags with my theme. The default theme works all right though.
In most cases your theme is missing the appropriate call to wp_head() usually found in header.php. Please patch it, taking it from the default theme.
If you don’t know how to do this, the following steps might work. Do them on your own risk:

    1. In your admin panel, go to Plugins – Theme Editor
    2. On the right bar, click on Header
    3. Locate the line with </head>
    4. Insert the following linke before it:
      <?php wp_head(); ?>
    5. Save
  • After activating All in One SEO Plugin I see two sets of meta tags.
Please just edit your theme and remove whatever static meta descriptions and/or meta keywords you have in there. If it’s not your theme, you are probably using another plugin that is generating them. Disable it.
  • My paged index pages are not showing any meta tags.
This is on purpose to avoid semi-duplicate content (your index pages are not your homepage so they shouldn’t use the same meta tags). It might change in the future.
  • My URLs don’t get rewritten.
All in One SEO Pack doesn’t handle this, it’s already done by WordPress itself. Visit Options – Permalinks to setup.
  • One Click Upgrade Error: Upgrade failed: Unable to find End of Central Dir Record signature [code -10]
Sorry I don’t know what’s causing this. It might be because the download got scrambled for some reasons. It’s up to manual updates now.
  • Why are you releasing so often?
The comments on the main post are full of feature and modification requests and also requests for bug fixes. Every time I fix something or implement a new feature I release a new version. Because somebody wanted it, and might also help many others. As I’m doing this in my spare time I usually implement things in short bursts whenever I find a consecutive number of free time slices to use. And of course I release immediately afterwards and then keep on doing whatever I else I do in my spare time. This way it’s out of my mind (and todo list) and at least one person is happy (and possibly many more).
  • Can I automatically include some keywords in all my posts?
The short answer is no. The slightly longer answer is that this plugin is about best practices for SEO, and having the same keywords over and over again on every post is not recommended.
  • Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted … What is that??
All in One SEO uses output buffering to rewrite the titles, for this to works it needs memory. There’s no way to optimize that much more, and on most hosting setups it just works which leads me to the conclusion that there are some companies who are just skimpy with memory. If the above error appears on admin pages, it’s not even output buffering related. I’d recommend switching to a host that can provide sufficient memory or disabling some plugins.
  • Why are the keywords showing on my page so everyone can see them?
You are misusing a feature called “Additional Post Meta Tags”. Please read the help text (simply by clicking on it in the options panel). It’s *not* meant for keywords.

  • Can I hire you for modifying All in One SEO Pack?
If you are serious about that please be prepared for my rate. Yes I’m doing this for fun but that doesn’t mean you can hire me for a few bucks per hour.
