Here is a copy of the email I received from Dreamhost support regarding my hosting woes. My blogs have been running really slow because Dreamhost likes to stuff as many sites onto a server as possible and they suffer from many hardware failures. They usually give me the “it’s not us, it’s you” answer, but I didn’t expect this response:
Hello,

Hello! I was able to take a look at your site and took a look at the
plugins for your wordpress install. You do have a lot of plugins for
wordpress that can slow down your site as well. I see that you have an
all-in-one seo package which is not allowed on the shared server since it
is known for causing significant issues. I have disabled the plugins
related to seo and note that if this becomes an issue where your site is
causing server issues, your account can be prone to disablement.
Please look at the ToS below:
http://www.dreamhost.com/tos.html
Items 7 and 8
# Servers are shared with other customers, and as such IRC-related
activities or severely CPU intensive CGI scripts (e.g. chat scripts,
scripts which have bugs causing them to not close properly after being
run, etc.) are not encouraged. Any application that listens for inbound
network connections (even if the application would otherwise be allowed)
are not permitted. BitTorrent clients, proxy servers/scripts, IRC bots
and bouncers (BNC) specifically may not be run on any DreamHost Web
Hosting server. If your processes are adversely affecting server
performance disproportionately DreamHost Web Hosting reserves the right
to negotiate additional charges with the Customer and/or the
discontinuation of the offending processes.
# Customer agrees to not engage in activities pertaining to Black Hat
SEO, Spamdexing, and so-called “Scraper sites.” These can all have a
severely detrimental effect on server performance and are not permitted.
If you have any further questions regarding this, please let me know.
Thanks!

Sure enough, I checked the backend of this blog and they did disable some plugins. Their deciding to alter the function of my website without any notice or warning is totally unacceptable to me.
Now I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I don’t see how a SEO plugin violates Dreamhost’s TOS anywhere. Anyone else experience something like this from these guys?
