Seriously, is it that hard to just check the changelogs? It's not like anyone is forcing someone to upgrade every time there's an update anyway.

Only when a large number of features are finished. We don't care about anyone having access to new features or bugfixes, we only want large updates, none of this small (yet helpful) stuff!

Well that was a pretty leading option ;-)

Here are my thoughts:

Yes, I know I can check the changelog, but if I don't check it every time I see the orange dot, I don't know if I'm being asked to upgrade for the same minor feature I decided to ignore yesterday, or whether there's a brand new mega-important security release. So I have to go read the changelog, and tbh, it's quicker to upgrade that to read the changelog these days ;-)

Other people don't know how to read the changelog. Whether they should learn or not, the practical fact is that they don't, and probably won't. It worries me that by them getting notified of updates to AIOSEOP so frequently, it diminishes the importance of updating in their minds. It concerns me that they start to ignore update notifications on a plugin, and end up ignoring update notifications on core.

That's why I voted for a few options in the poll: security releases, obviously, and bugfixes. Whenever a major feature is finished. And the one I quoted above, by which I mean, how about bundling a few of the minor updates together so the upgrade requests don't come through quite so often: I think that way, people would be more likely to upgrade straight away.

And before I shut up, I should also say thank you so much for this superb plugin: it's absolutely invaluable and I wouldn't be without it. And that's perhaps why those orange dots dancing in front of my eyes bug me so much. I hope I haven't offended you by voting against what's obviously your preference, but I did want to offer an opposing view.

It isn't that hard.  I've got a dozen plugins in use on multiple web sites and this one exceeds the number of updates the remainder of the plugins publish by a large margin.  It's not quite daily – but it feels like it.  That's entirely too frequent – unneccesary unless these are security patches.  Those are the only things that requre an immediate response.  Otherwise you are conditioning people to ignore your updates and annoying them by requiring them to step through the "yes I've donated" check box.  At some point it amounts to spam.

I, for one, appreciate the frequent updates. It demonstrates a few key things: 1) That the author is author lives by the famous open source proverb, "Release early, release often." 2) That the author is actively involved in improving the software based on feedback. This is far better than a developer who allows their product to become stale. 3) That the author is personally invested in the improvement of this software. As for the donations, it's not at all inappropriate to solicit donations for open source software. Time == money. No doubt a great deal of time has gone and continues to go into the development of this plugin. If it bothers you, don't update with each release — wait until its convenient for you. There is a new Linux kernel fairly often. That might be considered annoying too except that its a sign of progress.

One more thing…

The frequent updates would actually be less annoying if I then didn't have to go and re-activate the plugin. Any chance *that* element of it could be changed?

I would support that request (not disabling the plugin every time it's updated).  In fact, I'd even support an out of cycle release for that update ; ).
